A arte de ensinar é uma tarefa difícil demais para que alguém se envolva nela por comodismo, falta de fato melhor, ou porque é preciso auferir ganhos. Os padres da Companhia de Jesus, instalaram a primeira escola em 1549. O ensino nesta época era tradicional. A escola tradicional permaneceu por aproximadamente trezentos e oitenta e três anos. Com o governo de Getúlio Vargas, deu-se início à escola nova, onde o professor não se comportava como o transmissor de conhecimentos e sim um facilitador de aprendizagem, onde o aluno era um ser ativo e participante e estava no centro do processo de ensino/aprendizagem. Essa escola era uma escola democrática e divulgada para todos (o cidadão democrático). Devemos ter em mente que os professores exercem um papel insubstituível no processo da transformação social. A formação identitária do professor abrange o profissional, pois a docência vai mais além do que somente dar aulas, constituiu fundamentalmente a sua atuação profissional na prática social. A formação dos educadores não se baseia apenas na racionalidade técnica , como apenas executores de decisões alheias, mas , cidadãos com competência e habilidade na capacidade de decidir, produzindo novos conhecimentos para a teoria e prática de ensinar.
