Destacaremos as organizações que são mais frequentemente mencionadas como os maiores grupos terroristas da atualidade, ou seja, apenas aqueles grupos que ainda se encontram em atividade. Não se trata de umranking, haja vista que é difícil dizer qual grupo é mais importante ou mais perigoso.

Al-Qaeda: Com nome que significa “a base” em árabe, essa é a organização terrorista mais conhecida do mundo, sobretudo em razão dos atentados às torres do World Trade Center, em 11 de setembro de 2001. Ela é majoritariamente composta por muçulmanos fundamentalistas e tem por objetivo erradicar a influência ocidental sobre o mundo árabe. Foi criada em 1980 para defender o território do Afeganistão contra a URSS, que buscava expandir o domínio socialista sobre o país. Inicialmente essa organização contava com o apoio dos EUA, mas rompeu relações com esse país no início da década de 1990.

Estado Islâmico (EIIS): o Estado Islâmico no Iraque e na Síria (EIIS) é um grupo terrorista jihadista que age nos dois referidos países, tendo surgido em 2013 como uma dissidência da Al-Qaeda, inspirando-se nesse grupo. O seu líder é Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, que liderou a Al-Qaeda no Iraque em 2010 e que havia participado da resistência à invasão dos Estados Unidos ao território iraquiano em 2003. O objetivo do EIIS é a criação de um emirado islâmico abrangendo os territórios da Síria e do Iraque.

Talibã: o grupo Talibã é um grupo político que atua no Paquistão e no Afeganistão, também preocupado com a aplicação das leis da sharia. O grupo comandou o Afeganistão desde 1996 até 2001, quando os EUA invadiram o país após os atentados de 11 de setembro. Com a retirada das tropas estrangeiras, o grupo vem fortalecendo-se e retomando o controle de boa parte do território afegão.

The aim of the EIIS is the creation of an Islamic emirate covering territories of Syria and Iraq.

Taliban: The Taliban group is a political group that operates in Pakistan and Afghanistan also concerned about the application of sharia laws. The group led Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, when the US invaded the country after the attacks of September 11. With the withdrawal of foreign troops, the group has strengthened up and retaking control of much of Afghanistan.
